Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video

Wikipedia’s traffic has dropped 8% year over year, according to the Wikimedia Foundation’s Marshall Miller. After updating its bot detection systems, the foundation found that a lot of the traffic spikes from May and June were actually bots, not humans. Miller links the decline in human visitors to the rise of generative AI and social video, saying people now get answers directly from AI search summaries or short-form platforms rather than visiting Wikipedia. Although Google disputes that AI summaries reduce traffic, the foundation warns that fewer visits could mean fewer volunteers and donations. Still, Miller says Wikipedia remains vital because its content underpins much of what AI uses. To adapt, Wikipedia is working on a new attribution framework, expanding outreach teams, and calling for more volunteers. He also urges readers to support human-curated knowledge by checking sources and recognising the people behind the information they consume. READ MORE

Here are 5 reasons why it matters:

• Knowledge creation depends on visibility: Fewer visits mean fewer people contributing or editing pages, which threatens Wikipedia’s ability to keep information current and accurate.

• Funding could suffer: Wikipedia relies heavily on small donations from individual users. A drop in visitors could directly impact its funding and long-term sustainability.

• Information transparency is at risk: As people rely on AI summaries and short videos, they may lose awareness of where information comes from or how it’s verified, weakening trust in reliable sources.

• AI models depend on Wikipedia: Generative AI systems often draw from Wikipedia for factual grounding. If the site’s content stagnates or shrinks, it could affect the quality of AI-generated information.

• Public knowledge could centralise further: If most users stop visiting open, community-driven sources like Wikipedia and rely only on AI search tools or social media, knowledge becomes controlled by a handful of tech companies rather than the public.

Facebook’s AI can now suggest edits to the photos still on your phone

Facebook is rolling out a new Meta AI feature in the U.S. and Canada that can suggest edits to photos stored on your phone’s camera roll, even if they haven’t been uploaded to the platform. Once users opt in, the app can automatically generate ideas like collages, themed edits, and AI restyling, prompting users to share them on Facebook. To work, the app uploads photos to Meta’s cloud for processing, though the company says this content won’t be used for ads or AI training unless users share or edit the images. Still, Meta’s terms allow its AI to analyse photos, summarise contents, and even generate new versions, giving the company deeper insight into users’ lives and relationships. The feature can be turned off at any time in the app’s settings. While framed as a creative tool, it also strengthens Meta’s position in the AI race by granting access to more private user data and behaviour patterns. READ MORE

Step 1: Log in to Higgsfield AI and select Sora 2 in the “Create Video” section.

Step 2: Choose your input method — either write a text prompt, upload an image, or upload a short reference video.

Step 3: Select a preset or style (camera style, motion type, visual preset) that fits the look you want.

Step 4: Configure output settings (resolution, aspect-ratio, duration), then generate the video and download it when you’re happy. YOu don’t need a SORA 2 code and there’s no watermark when you download.
