Sora hit 1M downloads faster than ChatGPT 

OpenAI’s new video-generation app Sora has outpaced ChatGPT in early adoption, reaching 1 million downloads in under five days despite being invite-only and available only on iOS. Data from Appfigures shows Sora logged 627,000 downloads in its first week, slightly higher than ChatGPT’s 606,000 iOS downloads during its debut. Even when adjusting for Canada’s 45,000 installs, Sora still matched 96 percent of ChatGPT’s U.S.-only performance. The app’s rise was rapid: it hit No. 3 on the U.S. App Store on launch day and climbed to No. 1 by October 3, surpassing launches from Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot.

The surge was fuelled by viral user-generated content showcasing Sora 2’s realistic deepfake-style videos, which spread widely across social media. However, the popularity has also raised ethical concerns, as users have begun creating videos of deceased people, prompting public backlash from figures like Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams. Appfigures’ data shows Sora maintained strong daily installs, peaking at around 107,800 downloads on October 1 and remaining consistently high through October 6. READ MORE

Reflection AI raises $2B to be America’s open frontier AI lab, challenging DeepSeek

Reflection AI, a startup founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, has raised $2 billion at an $8 billion valuation, up from $545 million just seven months ago. The company is positioning itself as America’s open frontier AI lab, offering an open-source alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic, and a Western rival to Chinese firms like DeepSeek. With a team of around 60 researchers, many from DeepMind and OpenAI, Reflection AI has built a large-scale AI and reinforcement learning platform capable of training Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models previously thought possible only within major labs.

The startup plans to release its first frontier language model in 2026, trained on tens of trillions of tokens. While it will share model weights publicly, it will keep datasets and training pipelines proprietary, balancing openness with commercial viability. Researchers will have free access, but revenue will come from enterprises and governments developing sovereign AI systems.
