OpenAI fires back at Google with GPT-5.2 after ‘code red’ memo

OpenAI has released GPT-5.2, positioning it as its most advanced model yet and a direct response to growing pressure from Google’s Gemini 3. The launch follows an internal “code red” memo from Sam Altman after ChatGPT traffic declined and Google gained ground.

GPT-5.2 comes in three versions. Instant for speed and everyday tasks, Thinking for complex reasoning, coding and long-context work, and Pro for maximum accuracy on difficult problems. OpenAI says the model is better at coding, maths, long-form reasoning, tool use and multi-step workflows, with 38% fewer errors than GPT-5.1.

Rather than focusing on consumer features, the release leans heavily into enterprise and developer use cases. OpenAI wants to be the default platform for building AI applications, competing directly with Google’s deeply integrated Gemini ecosystem.

The launch also highlights rising stakes. OpenAI is spending heavily on compute, committing massive infrastructure investment while running increasingly expensive reasoning models. Notably, GPT-5.2 does not include a new image generator, an area where Google currently has momentum. READ MORE

Here are 5 reasons why it matters:

  • The AI arms race just escalated: This confirms AI leadership is no longer settled. Google is no longer chasing. OpenAI is fighting to reclaim ground, and that competition will drive faster improvements across reasoning, agents and real-world workflows.

  • Reasoning is now the main battleground: This is not about chat quality anymore. Stronger maths, logic and long-context reasoning are proxies for whether AI can safely handle financial models, legal work, forecasting and production code.

  • Enterprise use is the real prize: Despite the consumer narrative, GPT-5.2 is clearly aimed at developers and businesses. Whoever becomes the default foundation for AI apps will control the next decade of software.

  • AI is getting more powerful and more expensive: Advanced reasoning models cost far more to run. OpenAI is betting that higher intelligence justifies higher compute spend, which raises questions about pricing, margins and long-term sustainability.

  • Multimodal gaps still matter: OpenAI skipped image generation this round while Google doubled down. That gap matters for creators, marketers and anyone building visual workflows, and it signals where the next competitive push is likely to land.

Google launched its deepest AI research agent yet — on the same day OpenAI dropped GPT-5.2

Google launched a major upgrade to its Gemini Deep Research agent, powered by Gemini 3 Pro. This isn’t just a report-writing tool anymore. Google has turned it into a deeply capable research agent that developers can embed directly into their own applications.

The upgraded Deep Research agent can process massive amounts of information, reason over long contexts, and handle complex multi-step research tasks. Google says it’s already being used for serious work like due diligence and drug safety research. A new Interactions API gives developers more control over how the agent reasons and operates inside apps.

Google plans to roll this agent across its ecosystem, including Search, Google Finance, the Gemini app and NotebookLM. The goal is clear: prepare for a future where people don’t search the web themselves, their AI agents do it for them.

To support long-running agent workflows, Google emphasised Gemini 3 Pro’s focus on factual accuracy and reduced hallucinations. It also introduced a new open-source benchmark, DeepSearchQA, to measure complex information-seeking tasks, alongside existing benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam and BrowserComp.

On benchmarks, Google’s agent performed best on its own tests and Humanity’s Last Exam, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5 Pro came a close second and edged Google out on browser-based agent tasks. Those comparisons were quickly overshadowed by OpenAI’s same-day launch of GPT-5.2, highlighting just how fast and competitive the AI race has become. READ MORE

Tutorial: How to make this 2D to 3D artwork of you using Nano Banana PRO🍌

Step 1: Step 1. Open Gemini - Nano-Banana PRO 🍌

Step 2. Upload Your Image

Step 3. Paste this Prompt and make it yours

“A hyper-realistic, 8k, highly detailed photograph capturing a surreal artistic concept, presented as a close-up, eye-level shot with a standard lens. A man with the uploaded reference face, clean shaven, wearing an oversized black crew-neck t-shirt, is shown emerging from a torn sheet of plain off-white paper. His head and upper chest appear in full photographic realism, with accurate skin texture, natural hair, and realistic fabric detail on the shirt. The transition from realism to sketch begins exactly at the natural shoulder line. From that point downward, the entire body including shoulders, arms, torso, cargo pants and legs is illustrated as detailed black pencil sketches drawn onto the paper surface. The sketched arms must follow true human proportions, extending naturally to full length with no shortening or foreshortening. The sketched hands are spread wide and pressed against the inside of the paper as if he is breaking out of a flat drawing into real space. The torn edges around the opening are sharp, textured and thick, clearly showing the depth of the paper and strengthening the illusion of 3D realism emerging from a 2D sketch. The composition is centred, with the realistic upper body protruding forward while the sketched lower body radiates outward across the page. Soft, even cinematic lighting from the front gives gentle shadows on the real face and shirt, while keeping the pencil sketch flat, matte, and paper-like. The final result blends ultra-realistic portrait photography with hand-drawn illustration to create a striking trompe l’oeil effect of a man pulling himself out of a two-dimensional world.

Enjoy!
