OpenAI launches a general purpose agent in ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Agent, a new general-purpose AI tool built into ChatGPT that can perform complex digital tasks for users, such as managing calendars, generating slide decks, running code, and researching competitors. It merges past agentic capabilities from OpenAI’s tools like Operator and Deep Research, and allows users to connect external apps like Gmail and GitHub via ChatGPT connectors. The tool can also execute code through a terminal and use APIs, pushing the boundaries of what ChatGPT can automate.

Initially rolling out to Pro, Plus, and Team plan subscribers, ChatGPT Agent aims to shift ChatGPT from just answering questions to actually completing tasks. It’s designed with enhanced safety protocols, including real-time monitoring, prompt classifiers, and disabled memory features to reduce misuse, especially in sensitive areas like biosecurity. • It automates real work, not just chat: ChatGPT Agent can do things—book appointments, build presentations, and write code—not just talk about them. This turns ChatGPT into a true productivity assistant.

• It sets the tone for the future of work: This is one of the clearest steps toward a future where AI doesn’t just support us - it acts on our behalf, potentially saving hours of manual work and streamlining knowledge-based roles.

Perplexity sees India as a shortcut in its race against OpenAI

Perplexity is betting on India as a fast-track growth market in its race against OpenAI. While OpenAI dominates in the US, Perplexity is rapidly expanding in India by partnering with major local players and focusing on mass adoption.

The company just signed an exclusive deal with Bharti Airtel, offering all 360 million Airtel users a free 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription (normally $200). This follows earlier partnerships in Asia, including SoftBank (Japan) and SK Telecom (South Korea). India’s scale gives Perplexity a strategic edge.

In Q2, Perplexity saw a 600% increase in downloads (2.8M in India) and a 640% rise in monthly active users (3.7M), though OpenAI still leads in total users (19.8M in India). Perplexity has also teamed up with fintech giant Paytm and considered targeting Indian students to grow further. READ MORE
