OpenAI Could Show Ads on ChatGPT Based on What It Knows About You

OpenAI is reportedly planning to introduce targeted ads on ChatGPT based on user data and memory. According to The Information, several leaders within the company, many of them former Meta employees, view advertising as a major revenue opportunity. Around 20% of OpenAI’s workforce once worked at Meta, including Fidji Simo, now CEO of Applications, who is said to be spearheading the ad initiative and looking to hire a Chief of Monetisation.

The proposed ads would use ChatGPT’s memory feature, which stores user details to personalise conversations, to deliver more relevant promotions. Focus groups reportedly revealed that some users already believe ChatGPT shows ads, and this perception is being used internally to support the idea.

CEO Sam Altman, who once called ads a “last resort,” has recently softened his stance, describing them as “somewhat distasteful but not a nonstarter.” This shift signals that OpenAI may soon monetise ChatGPT through advertising, following similar paths taken by major tech companies to sustain growth.   • Industry-Wide Ripple Effect: If OpenAI succeeds with ads, competitors like Anthropic or Google DeepMind might follow, making advertising a norm in generative AI tools.

  • Cultural and Ethical Shift: Many of the executives pushing for ads are ex-Meta employees. Their approach could bring a social-media-style monetisation strategy into AI, blending personalisation, engagement, and profit motives in new ways.

Instagram’s latest feature lets you go back to see your watched Reels

Instagram has added a new “Watch History” feature for Reels, letting users see every Reel they’ve previously watched. You can find it under Profile → Settings → Your Activity → Watch History. The feature allows sorting by date, custom ranges, or creator, and users can delete items from their history. It solves the long-standing issue of losing track of interesting Reels, putting Instagram on par with TikTok’s similar feature.
