OpenAI and Perplexity are launching AI shopping assistants, but competing startups aren’t sweating it

OpenAI and Perplexity just launched AI shopping assistants built into their chatbots, letting users research products, compare prices, and even shop directly inside the chat. Both systems work similarly, with OpenAI letting people ask for specific items or cheaper alternatives, while Perplexity leans on its memory to give personalised recommendations.

Despite the big players moving in, specialised AI shopping startups aren’t worried. Leaders from Onton and Daydream argue that niche tools in fashion, furniture, and interior design still outperform general chatbots because they’re trained on domain-specific datasets, not broad search indexes. These startups build their own structured catalogues, making their recommendations more accurate and useful.

OpenAI and Perplexity still have an advantage with their huge user bases and retail partnerships with Shopify and PayPal, allowing seamless checkout inside the chat. That could help them monetise through e-commerce, similar to Google and Amazon. READ MORE

Here are 5 reasons why it matters:

  • The future of shopping is moving inside chat interfaces: People won’t browse websites the same way. Instead, they’ll ask an AI in natural language to shortlist products and complete checkout. This changes how brands think about visibility, SEO, ads, and conversion.

  • Startups must specialise or get crushed: General-purpose AI assistants will dominate broad shopping queries. The only survival path for smaller companies is niche depth: better data, better curation, better domain logic.

  • Retail partnerships are becoming power plays: With Shopify and PayPal integrated, OpenAI and Perplexity don’t just recommend products. They own the transaction layer. That means control of customer data, attribution, and ad revenue.

  • Search advertising is about to be rewritten: If AI chat replaces traditional search, the advertising model shifts. Brands may soon pay to show up in AI-generated recommendations, raising the same concerns we saw with Google search bias.

  • Vertical AI is carving out a new category: Fashion, furniture, travel, and home goods require emotional nuance and specialised data. This opens opportunities for creators and founders who build narrow, high-quality AI tools rather than trying to compete with general LLMs.ChatGPT’s voice mode is no longer a separate interface

OpenAI has updated ChatGPT so voice mode no longer sits in a separate screen. You can now talk to ChatGPT and watch its responses appear in the same chat window, instead of swapping into the old blue-circle interface. This makes it easier to move between speaking and typing, see previous messages, and view images or maps while talking.

You still need to tap “end” to stop the voice conversation, but the new integrated layout is now the default across web and mobile. Anyone who prefers the old standalone voice mode can switch it back on in settings. READ MORE

“Nighttime Vietnamese street-food stall scene on a busy roadside in Hanoi. A small low wooden table in the centre is filled with classic Vietnamese snacks: nem rán, bánh gối, fried platters, quail eggs, dipping sauces, and hot glasses of đen đá and trà nóng. Four men sit tightly around the table in the exact positions from the reference. • Left seat: Donald Trump with his recognisable hairstyle, light skin, wearing a casual black jacket, smiling softly, holding an acoustic guitar on his lap exactly like the reference pose. • Middle-left seat: Vladimir Putin, short hair, light skin, wearing a simple grey T-shirt, sitting upright with a firm expression, looking directly at the camera. • Middle-right seat: Kim Jong-un, round face, neat hairstyle, wearing a light grey long-sleeve shirt, calm expression, positioned exactly like the older man in the reference image. • Right seat: the man from the uploaded reference photo, no hat, wearing a black polo shirt, holding up a glass of trà đá toward the camera. Behind them is a warm lantern-lit Vietnamese street-food cart with skewers, chả xiên, bánh tôm, and trays of fried snacks. Motorbikes pass in light motion blur, creating that lively Hanoi night-market vibe. Shot like an iPhone night photo. Realistic, gritty, warm, and cinematic."
