Netflix to redesign its app as it competes with social platforms for daily engagement
Netflix is redesigning its mobile app to compete more directly with social platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram by shifting towards a more mobile-first, social-style experience. Launching later in 2026, the update will lean heavily into vertical, swipeable short-form video to improve content discovery and daily engagement, while also supporting Netflix’s growing push into video podcasts through originals and partnerships with major podcast networks. Netflix says this is about experimentation, not imitation, as it responds to a reality where streaming now competes with the entire entertainment ecosystem, not just other streamers. The move comes as Netflix remains financially strong, with USD $45.2 billion in 2025 revenue, over 325 million paid subscribers, and rapidly growing ad revenue. READ MORE
Here are 5 reasons why it matters:
Attention is the real battleground: Netflix is no longer just fighting other streaming apps. It is fighting TikTok, YouTube and Instagram for daily screen time.
Short-form is now a growth lever, not a trend: Vertical clips are becoming a core discovery engine, not just marketing extras.
Streaming and social are officially merging: Video podcasts and swipeable feeds blur the line between TV, social media and creator platforms.
Advertising upside gets bigger: More daily engagement means more ad inventory and better targeting, which boosts revenue beyond subscriptions.
The app becomes a product, not just a player: Netflix is turning its app into a flexible platform that can evolve with new formats, creators and behaviours instead of being locked into long-form viewing only.
Humans&, a ‘human-centric’ AI startup founded by Anthropic, xAI, Google alums, raised $480M seed round
Humans&, a three-month-old AI startup founded by former researchers and executives from Anthropic, Google and xAI, has raised a massive USD $480 million seed round at a USD $4.48 billion valuation, signalling continued investor appetite for elite AI spin-outs. Backed by Nvidia, Jeff Bezos, SV Angel, GV and Emerson Collective, the company is positioning itself around “human-centric” AI that helps people collaborate rather than replacing them, with ambitions that resemble an AI-powered messaging or coordination layer for organisations and communities. Its team draws talent from OpenAI, Meta, MIT and Stanford, and its technical focus includes long-horizon and multi-agent reinforcement learning, memory, and deeper user understanding. While the raise is enormous, it reflects a broader trend of mega-seed rounds in AI, where pedigree and capital are flowing freely, even as recent examples show that funding and valuation alone don’t guarantee long-term success. A hyper-realistic surreal portrait of the reference person (use uploaded face exactly, no changes to facial structure, proportions, skin tone, or identity) depicted as a human inflatable tube man, like the wacky waving figures seen outside car dealerships. The scene is set in Melbourne, with a clearly recognisable city backdrop such as Flinders Street Station, the Yarra River skyline, Federation Square, or the CBD with trams in motion. The location must feel unmistakably Melbourne at a glance. The face remains perfectly solid, calm, and realistic, sharp focus with natural skin texture and zero distortion. From the neck down, the body becomes elongated, air-filled, and ultra-flexible, bending, folding, and flailing mid-motion as if powered by strong airflow from below. Arms wave loosely above the head, torso kinks and collapses, legs stretch and buckle naturally. The entire body shares one consistent inflatable fabric texture, soft matte material stretched over air, with subtle seams and fabric tension. No plastic shine, no cartoon styling. Clothing inflates and stretches with the body, following the same airflow and gravity. Environmental cues show strong Melbourne wind: hair blown sideways, jackets and scarves pulled taut, tram cables vibrating, flags whipping, light debris moving through the air. The inflatable body reacts dynamically to the gusts, frozen at a dramatic off-balance bend. Lighting is natural Melbourne daylight, slightly overcast but bright, with realistic shadows that warp with the body’s movement. Camera: eye-level portrait shot, slight wide-angle for scale. Style: photorealistic surrealism, cinematic editorial quality. Mood: surreal, playful, iconic, effortlessly cool. Aspect ratio: 9:16 or 4:5. No text, no logos, no alteration of facial identity.
Enjoy!
