Meta just bought Manus, an AI startup everyone has been talking about

Meta has agreed to acquire Manus, a fast-growing AI agent startup that blew up after demoing autonomous agents that could screen job candidates, plan trips, and analyse investments. The company launched in early 2025, raised $75M led by Benchmark, hit over $100M in annual recurring revenue, and attracted millions of users within months.

Meta is reportedly paying around $2B, the valuation Manus was seeking for its next round. For Mark Zuckerberg, this is a strategic bet on AI products that already generate real revenue. Meta plans to keep Manus operating independently while integrating its AI agents into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

There is political sensitivity due to Manus’ Chinese roots. To address this, Meta has confirmed that Manus will cut all Chinese ownership ties and shut down operations in China after the acquisition. READ MORE

Here are 5 reasons why it matters:

• This validates AI agents as a real business: Manus is not a hype demo. It has paying users and serious revenue. That changes the AI conversation from future potential to present-day economics.

• Meta finally bought revenue, not just research: Meta has poured tens of billions into AI infrastructure. Manus gives them something rare: an AI product that already makes money and scales.

• AI is moving from chat to action: Manus represents the shift from chatbots to agents that actually do work. Hiring, planning, analysis, execution. This is where AI becomes operational, not just informational.

• Platform distribution will supercharge agents: Plugging AI agents into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp gives them instant access to billions of users. That’s an adoption accelerator most startups could never buy.

• Geopolitics is now part of AI M&A: The China angle shows that AI acquisitions are no longer just about tech and talent. Ownership, national security, and regulation now directly affect deal structure and strategy.

Investors predict AI is coming for labor in 2026

Investors expect 2026 to be the year AI starts having a visible impact on jobs, particularly in large enterprises.

Evidence is already stacking up. A recent MIT study found around 11.7% of jobs could already be automated with current AI. Companies are cutting entry-level roles, pointing to AI in layoff decisions, and reassessing how many employees they actually need as AI adoption increases.

Venture capitalists surveyed by TechCrunch believe enterprise budgets will begin shifting away from hiring and towards AI spend in 2026. Investors from firms like Hustle Fund, Exceptional Capital, Sapphire, Battery Ventures, and Black Operator Ventures all expect labour impact, even if they disagree on how severe it will be.

Some predict automation of repetitive and logic-based roles, others expect AI agents to move beyond productivity tools and start fully automating work. There’s also concern AI will be used as a convenient excuse for layoffs, even when cuts are driven by poor past decisions rather than actual AI readiness.

While AI companies argue automation will push humans into higher-value work, investors do not believe worker anxiety will ease in 2026. The overall message is clear. Something big is coming for the labour market, even if the exact shape is still uncertain. READ MORE
