Following YouTube, Meta announces crackdown on ‘unoriginal’ Facebook content

Meta has announced a new crackdown on unoriginal content on Facebook, targeting accounts that repeatedly repost others’ text, photos, or videos without adding meaningful value. The company has already removed 10 million impersonator accounts and penalised another 500,000 for spam and fake engagement. This move follows similar steps from YouTube and responds to a growing wave of low-quality AI-generated content, often called "AI slop." Meta clarified that creators can still remix content through reactions, trends, and commentary, but direct reposting for monetisation will lead to reduced reach or loss of monetisation privileges. The update will roll out gradually and includes new dashboard tools to help creators understand any penalties. READ MORE

Why it matters and how can we adapt to this change:

  • Originality Wins: If you want to grow on Facebook, simply reposting or using AI tools to churn out generic content won’t cut it anymore.

  • Impact on Monetisation: Creators relying on reshared content risk being cut off from Facebook’s monetisation programs and recommendation algorithm.

  • AI Content Standards Are Shifting: Meta is subtly targeting AI-generated "slop" content, pushing creators to tell authentic stories rather than stitch together meaningless clips.

  • Creator Transparency Tools: New post-level insights and risk indicators will help creators better understand how their content is performing or why it's being penalised.

  • It’s About Trust and Credibility: The crackdown is part of a broader effort to improve content quality, curb misinformation, and protect original creators - something that's becoming more urgent as generative AI floods platforms.

Google Discover adds AI summaries, threatening publishers with further traffic declines

Google has officially launched AI-generated news summaries in its Discover feed on the Google app for iOS and Android in the U.S., starting with lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment. Instead of headlines from individual publishers, users now see a summary written by AI, with multiple publisher logos cited. While the summaries are marked as AI-generated and may contain errors, this rollout is not a test and is part of a broader trend where Google presents more information directly in-app, reducing the need for users to click through to publisher websites.
