Instagram Edits topped 7M downloads in first week, a bigger launch than CapCut’s

​Instagram Edits, Meta’s new video creation app for crafting Reels, Stories, and posts, had a huge launch, surpassing ByteDance’s CapCut by a large margin. In its first two days, Edits achieved 702,900 downloads on iOS, around 37 times more than CapCut’s early figures.

By Thursday, Edits reached 1.2 million iOS downloads and 5.9 million Android downloads, totalling 7.1 million in its first week. In the U.S., Edits saw 381,000 downloads compared to CapCut’s mere 3,400, a 112x bigger debut.

Boosted by Meta’s massive network, Edits quickly rose to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store, maintaining a top-three position throughout the week.
While Edits outperformed CapCut at launch, it still has a long journey to match CapCut’s 1.22 billion total downloads worldwide. READ MORE

Why it matters and how can we adapt to this change:

• Meta’s network advantage is overwhelming: Meta leveraged Instagram’s massive user base to catapult Edits to success instantly, showing how strong its ecosystem still is for new product launches.

• Immediate threat to CapCut’s dominance: Although CapCut has years of lead time, Edits' explosive start signals real competition in the short-form video editing market.

• Edits fills a strategic gap for Instagram: By offering a built-in companion app, Meta strengthens its hold over creators and users, reducing reliance on third-party editing apps like CapCut.

• Potential for new monetisation streams: Meta could easily monetise Edits later through a paid version or ads, providing a fresh revenue line tied directly to Instagram content creation.

• User expectations are shifting: Despite its fast growth, Edits will need to match or exceed CapCut’s features (like templates and effects) to maintain momentum, pushing innovation faster across video creation apps.

A new, open source text-to-speech model called Dia has arrived to challenge ElevenLabs, OpenAI and more…

A small startup called Nari Labs has launched Dia, a new open source text-to-speech (TTS) model with 1.6 billion parameters. Created by just two people, Dia challenges major players like ElevenLabs, Google's NotebookLM, and OpenAI's gpt-4o-mini-tts.

One of the founders, Toby Kim, claims Dia outperforms competing models in natural dialogue, emotional tone, nonverbal sounds, and voice cloning. The model was built without funding, trained on Google's TPUs, and is fully available for download and use on Hugging Face and GitHub under an Apache 2.0 licence, meaning it can be used commercially. It includes features like speaker tagging, emotional cues, and audio conditioning, making it highly customisable for different speech needs. Dia is English-only at the moment and can generate multiple voices unless conditioned by an audio prompt. READ MORE
