Google and Grok are catching up to ChatGPT, says a16z’s latest AI report

Andreessen Horowitz’s latest AI consumer report shows that ChatGPT still leads the market, but rivals like Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Meta AI are catching up fast. For the first time, Google has four separate AI products on the list — Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs — reflecting its growing consumer presence. Gemini is the No. 2 AI app, with nearly half the monthly users of ChatGPT, and is especially strong on Android. Grok has also grown quickly, now boasting over 20 million monthly users since its launch in late 2024. Meanwhile, Chinese AI products continue to dominate global charts, with companies like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI pushing into the top rankings. The report highlights a shifting AI landscape, with growth flattening for some players (DeepSeek, Claude) and new entrants like Replit and Lovable making the list for the first time. READ MORE

Why it matters and how can we adapt to this change:

  1. Competition is intensifying: Google’s Gemini and Grok are closing the gap, signalling that OpenAI no longer has a clear monopoly in consumer AI.

  2. Diversification of platforms: Google splitting its AI products into distinct offerings (Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, Labs) shows how AI companies are building specialised tools instead of relying on one flagship app.

  3. Rapid adoption of Grok: Going from no stand-alone app to 20M+ users in under a year highlights how fast AI products can scale when tied to an existing ecosystem like X (Twitter).

  4. China’s AI surge: Nearly half of the top mobile AI apps are developed in China, showing that global AI innovation is not confined to Silicon Valley, and competition will be increasingly international.

  5. Market shake-up ahead: Flattening growth for some leaders (like DeepSeek) and the rise of newcomers (Replit, Lovable) suggests the consumer AI market is still fluid, with opportunities for disruption.

Vocal Image is using AI to help people communicate better

Estonia-based startup Vocal Image is helping people improve their communication skills with AI-powered voice coaching. Founded by Belarusian CEO Nick Lahoika, who once struggled with diction and speaking anxiety, the company has grown from a YouTube channel into a subscription app offering exercises like tongue twisters, breathing techniques, and AI-driven feedback. With over 4 million downloads, 160,000 active users, and 50,000 paying subscribers, Vocal Image has reached $12 million in annual recurring revenue. Backed by a $3.6 million seed round led by Educapital, the 20-person team, mostly Belarusian exiles, continues to expand from its base in Estonia. The app processes 35,000 daily recordings and has built a dataset of more than one million labelled voice samples, giving it an edge in training its AI while ensuring GDPR compliance. Recognised as a winner in the European AI Startup Program by Hugging Face, Meta, and Scaleway, Vocal Image now plans to grow its team, expand localisations, and stay ahead of rising competitors like Headway. Step 1: Strip my stack to the essentials for a minimum viable launch.

Step 2: Build a simple sales/lead funnel using no more than 3 tools (e.g., Gumroad, ConvertKit, Stan Store).

Step 3: Output should include:

Tools and setup

Funnel flow (landing → lead → purchase)

What to skip for now

1–2 simple KPIs to track"

7️⃣ Retention & Community Building
