Google Gemini’s AI image model gets a ‘bananas’ upgrade
Google has rolled out Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, a major upgrade to its Gemini chatbot that improves AI-powered image editing. The update gives users finer control over edits through natural language, preserves details like faces and animals, and allows multi-turn interactions for complex changes. Already tested under the alias “nano-banana” on LMArena, the tool proved state-of-the-art and drew strong user reactions. This move positions Google to better compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4o image generator, Meta’s Midjourney deal, and Black Forest Labs’ FLUX models. With 450 million monthly Gemini users compared to ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly, Google is betting that stronger image capabilities will close the gap. Anthropic launches a Claude AI agent that lives in Chrome
Anthropic has launched a research preview of Claude for Chrome, a browser-based AI agent available to 1,000 Max plan subscribers with a waitlist for others. The tool lets users chat with Claude in a side window that remembers browser context and, with permission, take actions inside Chrome. It enters a competitive space where Perplexity has rolled out its Comet browser, OpenAI is rumoured to be building its own, and Google has integrated Gemini into Chrome, all while a possible antitrust ruling may force Google to sell Chrome. Anthropic is positioning its release as both a useful assistant and a safety experiment, introducing protections against prompt injection attacks by blocking certain sites and requiring user approval for sensitive actions.
