OpenAI launches two ‘open’ AI reasoning models

OpenAI has released GPT-5, its first “unified” AI model that merges the deep reasoning abilities of the o-series with the fast responses of the GPT series. Unlike GPT-4, which mainly provided smart replies, GPT-5 can directly perform complex tasks for users such as building full software applications, managing calendars, and creating research briefs. It uses a real-time router to decide when to answer instantly or spend more time reasoning.

GPT-5 is now the default model for free ChatGPT users, marking the first time OpenAI has made a top-tier reasoning model available without a paywall. The model scores at or near the top of industry benchmarks for coding, science, and creative tasks, with reduced hallucination rates compared to prior models. The company is using AI for recommendations, personalisation, multimodal search (text + images), conversational search, and ad targeting, calling this a “Cambrian moment” for AI innovation.
